Civil Law

Civil law is essentially the old roman law embodied in the Justinian Code and presently prevailing in most Western European States. In Maryland, civil law is a branch of the law that pertains to noncriminal matters or in other words outside the practise of criminal law. Civil law pertains to the rights, duties of persons and disputes arising from contracts, torts as well as property interests and rights. A civil action, commonly referred to as a lawsuit, complaint or petition is a legal action maintained to protect a private, civil right, or to compel a civil remedy or determine a civil liability.
